General Bonnal{218} blames Bessières for allowing himself to be frightened into retreat when, by a bold offensive with Wrede and Molitor, he would probably have forced Hiller to retreat. That, says the critic, is an instance of the small value of most of Napoleon's marshals when not acting under his immediate command. On the other hand, it must be remembered that Bessières was very largely outnumbered, and had no reason to suppose that there was anything to support him.

He is certainly right when, in reporting his retirement, he surmises that Hiller would not have recrossed the Inn had he known of Charles' defeat. He did hear of it in the night of the 24th-25th from the Emperor, who had received Charles' despondent letter of the 23rd. Thereupon he promptly withdrew to his old quarters at Neu-Oetting, with the II. Reserve at Marktl, and three rearguards west of the Inn.
